Cemetery Visit

Year 4 were invited to the unveiling of a new bench at Darwen Cemetery. The bench was dedicated to the women of Darwen for their efforts, courage and fortitude during the First World War.

The bench was unveiled by the Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire, who represents the Queen in our county.

The Mayor of Darwen, Councillor Brian Taylor, was also at the ceremony. He stopped to show the children his badge of office and promised to come and visit the school.

After the bench was unveiled, two children from Ashleigh laid a wreath to commemorate the soldiers who fell at the battle of the Somme, 100 years ago.

Mr East, from Friends of Darwen Cemetery, then took the children to look at two war graves, one of which was an Accrington Pal.
