About Our Library

At Ashleigh we believe that reading is at the heart of all learning. Whilst all pupils are encouraged to read their reading book every night, reading for pleasure is an essential and lifelong skill. The library forms a huge part of this and we are very fortunate at Ashleigh to have a dedicated library which is used by all the pupils in the school.

How does it work?

Every week, each class visit the library on a designated day with their class teacher. Each child is allowed to borrow one book at this session. These books need to be returned every week and can be renewed if they'd like to continue reading.

We also have optional library sessions:

- KS2 Book Club runs on Monday lunchtimes 12.30-1pm; children can come and read quietly with their own book, take part in a craft activity, or listen to our ongoing book.

- KS1 Story Club runs through the Summer Term on Wednesday lunchtimes, 12.30-1pm - weather permitting, we read stories in the garden.

- There are lots of opportunities for children to develop skills alongside reading. We work closely with Lancashire Schools Library Service and benefit greatly from their specialist subject loans, class reads, workshops and their Book Bus visits each year to boost our classroom libraries. We recruit judges for the Fantastic Book Awards from Y5 and for the Brilliant Book Awards from Y2 each year. All the children are very welcome to submit book recommendations, many of which are used in displays and inform our book-buying plans.
